The Show

Growing up is not easy for everyone. Being human is not easy. Existence itself is complex, unyielding, and in some ways fragile.
In search of understanding and a more manageable life, we all create systems for ourselves. Ideologies, routines and religion; ways to survive and to find meaning. But what happens when these systems, meant to support us, take over and begin to control us?

Flækt is a dance piece based on the personal experience of its creator and performer, Juliette Louste, with mental health struggle while being a child, among others with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Due to hypersensitivity mixed with childhood traumas, she developed strict and rigid systems to cope with a world that neither understood her nor recognized her peculiarities. These systems were her shield. Gradually, however, they took over, and the protection became an overwhelming burden on her shoulders.

In the work, Juliette explores how one can dance with shadows, chaos, and entanglement — with support, awareness, and unyielding perseverance.

Flækt invites the audience into the unveiling of the inner landscape of obsession.

The project is supported by Viva Holding.

The artist

Juliette Louste (FR) has been educated as dancer and choreographer. She trained in Varium with Anna Sanchez, and graduated from the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona (Superior Dance Conservatory), with a master degree in Choreography, with honours, for the show It's the same old dream. In 2012, she founded Juliette Louste Company.

Working on and around stage since 2004, she has been working as a dancer, choreographer and improviser as much as technical director, technician and light designer. Established in Iceland since 2015, she works with independent projects but also for the main theatres in Reykjavík, as well as festivals, in and outside the country. As an assistant, in the technical or artistic department, she has been working with artists such as Carolyn Carlson, Akram Khan, Israel Galván and Dada Masilo. She has been a part of PerkImBa since its foundation, working closely with Neus Fernández and Thierry Hochstätter.

Her fondest hobby is to improvise on stage with jazz musicians, which she has been doing among many others with Hermeto Pascoal, Jorge Rossy, Peter Bernstein, Brad Mehldau, Marco Mezquida, Ramon Prats, Albert Cirera.

In 2023, she was nominated for the Icelandic Theatre Awards as light designer and choreographer, both for the piece Ég lifi enn, sönn saga, making her the first woman to be nominated for light design and the first in these two categories.

As a technician, she also has a long career. She’s an established light designer, light representative and technical director and has been active for more than 20 years. She has been the technical director of 3 festivals for a combined 13 years: UNGI, Reykjavík Fringe and Reykjavík Dance Festival.

Guided by the belief that without art we are adrift, Juliette crafts layered choreographic landscapes where music, technique, and structure intertwine like threads in motion.
